Article by Gail Hart: The timing of birth has major consequences for a baby. Too early or too late can mean the difference between life and death. Or so we have come to believe; and it's undoubtedly true at the extreme ends of preterm and postterm birth dates. Although few babies are born at these extremes of the normal length of pregnancy, much of our prenatal care is based on bringing babies to birth "in a timely fashion"—neither too early nor too late. But our understanding of "timely" is clouded, and some of our methods are self-defeating. By intervening in the natural timing of birth, we sometimes exacerbate the problems or create entirely new ones.

Early Preterm Birth In Twin Pregnancy Is Not Prevented By Progesterone Treatment
An article published Online first and in this weeks issue of The Lancet describes that despite demonstrating some promise in high-risk singleton pregnancies, progesterone treatment still does not avoid early preterm birth in pregnant women with twins. Previous examinations have recommended that progesterone treatment might prevent preterm birth in high-risk singleton pregnancies, but it is still unclear if treatment is effective in twin pregnancies.

Survey
Hi there. I'm doing a paper on home birth/natural childbirth and I was wondering if any of you would like to answer a few questions on the subject. I hope it's ok to post this here.

How many children do you currently have?
How old were you when you had your first natural birth? Second, third, etc?
Where do you currently live? What city/state/country etc did you reside in when you gave birth?
If you have more than one child, did you choose natural birth for all of your children?
Have you ever given birth in a hospital before?
Do you have any friends/family/acquaintances etc that have chosen natural childbirth?
Who was present at any of your births? Midwives, nurse midwives, etc, or did you give birth unassisted?
Woul...

Midwives Honor the Sensuality of Pregnancy and Birth
Article by Shafia M. Monroe: "People have often said to me, "You must really love babies to be a midwife.' And 'Wow, how you can stand all that blood?' Of course midwives love babies. We work hard to provide care to ensure that a woman has a healthy pregnancy and thus a vigorous baby. But in actuality, midwives love women. We love to see them happy during their pregnancy, supported during their labor, honored in birth, sustained while breastfeeding and nurtured as new mothers." This is an article excerpt from Midwifery Today magazine, Autumn 2008.

Homebirth vs. birth center birth
Hello!

I am pregnant with my second baby and due in August. I'm currently planning to birth at a midwife owned independent birth center just a few minutes from my house. I'm now considering possibly having a home birth instead. The midwife is able to do either one, so it's really up to me. Can we talk about the benefits/downsides to a home birth vs. the birth center (and vice versa)? I can't make up my mind and need help thinking this through.

Thanks! :)
